James Charlotte is the well established brand for hand framed knitwear produced by our skilled knitters and linkers based in Great Grimsby, England.
Our factory is on the ‘Top Floor’ of a building built 150 years ago for the making and repairing of fishing nets for the mighty Grimsby fishing fleet. Another craft needing nimble fingers.
Our key personnel have been designing and making ‘James Charlotte’ knitwear since the label was born over 25 years ago.
Hand framed knitwear is crafted by people and not by a machine. The process is powered by the knitter who selects the stitches for fashioning (shaping) or cabling as required.
Linking is the process we use to join knitted panels. Point to point linking needs excellent eyesight and nimble fingers as each individual stitch must be joined, a very special skill is needed to achieve our perfectly smooth seams.
James Charlotte knitwear is produced on 3½ and 5 gauge frames often using cabling and slip stitch to achieve garments with our renowned classic beauty.
Wool
We use British Wool extensively to achieve our trademark bulky knitted garments that have the very special warmth and comfort that wool provides. Many of our garments are made from naturally coloured wool where the different shades are produced by blending coloured wool from black sheep with white wool.
Linen
Pure 100% Linen gives a really comfortable to wear luxurious garment and we have mastered the techniques necessary to make this exceptional knitwear.
Cotton
Our Cotton garments are knitted from ring spun combed cotton that is soft and colourfast. James Charlotte cotton knitwear has natural British styling.
Only perfection is good enough when making James Charlotte garments. Our staff include very experienced artisans, who have dedicated their working lives to making quality knitwear. Skills are passed on through extensive and continuing training of our newer recruits.
